108 BEHOLDING LIBERTY!
The «Martial Trumpet Call» of Adamantios Korais, published also in a French translation by Guerrier de Dumast
in July 1821, made the opening order of
the Struggle resonate throughout Europe. The moment had come. Already in 1814 the members of the Society of Friends prepared the armed uprising of
the Greeks for Freedom. With Odessa
as starting point and Nikolaos Skoufas, Athanasios Tsakalov and Emmanuel Xanthos as pioneers, this secret organization was systematically weaving an extensive web of members who acted under the watchful eye of the Ottoman administration and the European authoritarian regimes. Aliases, a cipher (cryptographic alphabet) and secret symbols, all codified the revolutionary message, which was transferred by agents, who were known as «Apostles». During
the first years of its life, the organization numbered a few members. Soon, however, annexes were set up in many cities
