THE THEATRICAL PLAY OF GEOR- GIOS LASSANIS FROM KOZANI, mem- ber of the Society of Friends and fighter of ‘21, was staged at Odessa, where he was working as teacher, in the early 1819. Apart from being a dramatic text, of doubtful, in any case, dramaturgical value, it is a disguised political manifesto, preparatory for the upcoming Revolution.
The characters of the play are: the tyrannicides Harmodios and Aristogeiton; the Lioness, who cuts off the tongue, so as not to be able to talk to the torturers and betray the names of the tyrannicides; Hipparchos, tyrant of Athens, and Cleisthenes in self-imposed exile in Thebes.
PRELUDE 10
Ioannis Filimon
Historical Treatise about the Society of Friends Nafplio: By the Printing House of
Th. Kontaxis & N. Loulakis, 1834
Library of the Hellenic Parliament
FIGHTER OF 1821, journalist and editor of newspapers, Ioannis Filimon (1798-1874) studied in Constantinople and took refuge on Hydra upon the outbreak of the Revolution. He took part in military operations in the Peloponnese on the side of Dimi- trios Ypsilantis.
As member of the Society of Friends he writes the Treatise, which is his only complete written work, be- ing at the same time the first synthetic work on the Society of Friends, which contains important infor- mation about structure, activity and secret codes.
In the Foreword of the Treatise Filimon makes it clear to the reading public that «This Treatise does not promise perfection», it is possible to also con- tain mistakes, which are due to the «obscure nature of the Cause».
