AMVROSIOS FRANTZIS (secular name Andronikos Fratzis), clergyman, historian, politician and fighter of the Revolution of 1821, was a mem- ber of the Society of Friends.
In January 1821, together with bishop Germanos, he came from Kyparissia to Vostitsa (modern Ai- gio), to take part in the similarly called secret As- sembly (26-30 January 1821), which took place in the house of the province’s notable Andreas Lontos, in the presence of other important hier- archs and notables of the wider region, such as,

Anastasios Goudas
Parallel Lives of men distinguishedin the regeneration of Greece, vol. I The role of clergy in the Revolution
Athens: By the National Printing House, 1869
Library of the Hellenic Parliament
THE EPIROT AUTHOR Anastasios Gou- das, in his inspired by Plutarch’s original work Par- allel Lives of the men distinguished in the regenera- tion of Greece, refers to the significant role of the Greek-Orthodox clergy in the Revolution of 1821, and indeed to the brutal tortures that its represen- tatives suffered «in perseverance for religion and the fight».
During the Revolution, countless priests and monks fought in the battlefields, but also were subjected to imprisonments, persecutions, exiles and even death. Characteristic examples of national martyrs are the Bishop of Salona (Amfissa) Isaias, who was killed fighting in the battle of Chalkomata together with his brother, priest ‘papa-Giannis’, as well as Athanasios Diakos, who sacrificed his life in the battle of Alamana, on 22 April 1821.
among others, Papaflessas, Ioannis Papadiaman- topoulos, Andreas and Nikolaos Lontos, Andreas Zaimis et al. Despite the fact that Papaflessas’ proposition for an immediate armed insurrection against the Turks with the support of Russia, ar- guing that there was «countless money» and a «great fleet», was treated with mistrust by the rest of the attendants («the advocated by Gre- gorios Dikaios», as Frantzis states on page 93), the die for the explosion of the Revolution had already been cast.
