THE SCHOLAR AND PRIEST Konstanti- nos Oikonomos of the House of Oikonomoi (1780- 1857), who developed great activity in Hellenic centres (Thessaloniki, Izmir, Constantinople) and elsewhere (Vienna, Berlin, Saint Petersburg), in 1819 found himself near Patriarch Gregory IV.
Being a Filiki Etaireia member, he took refuge in Odessa when the Greek Revolution broke out. It was there that he received the news, not only of the hanging of the Patriarch (April 10, 1821), whose dead body was thrown into the waters of
the Bosphorus by an enraged Turkish mob, but also saw the body, which had been recovered by Greek sailors.
The eulogy he delivered on June 19 captivated his audience and made him famous in vast Russia. It was released with permission from Russian censor- ship (September 1, 1821), and was translated into French and German during the same year. Reprint- ed during the same year, this Russian translation by anonymous can safely be attributed to Roxane Stourtza.
