THIS TEXT IS ATTRIBUTED to the Cor- fiot scholar and politician Andreas Moustoxydes (1785-1860), who in his extensive correspondence informed Western Europeans about the course of events during the Greek Revolution; later, he active- ly helped the efforts of his friend and compatriot, Ioannis Kapodistrias, for the establishment of the modern Greek state.
Here, Moustoxydes documents the activity of
the Greek Navy during the first two years of the War (1821-22), citing original documents, mainly related to the fleet of the islands of Hydra and Spetses.
The frontispiece features a revolutionary flag (en- graved by G. Engelmann), with an anchor with a snake and a palm tree, left; a red banner, right; and a cross on the crescent, centre; the inscription reads: ‘With your shield or on it 1821’.
