THE NAVAL BATTLE OF NAVARINO
was captured in a great number of artworks, both paintings and prints, as it ignited interest all around Europe. Émile Rouargue’s small-scale cop- perplate was made after a first-hand account of the historic naval battle by L.A. Garneray – as was the large-scale painting by J.P.M. Jazet [cat. no II.5.5]; it focuses on the conflict and its aftermath,

vividly capturing the drama of naval warfare, with the wrecks of Ottoman warships and their sail- ors swimming for their lives in the foreground. In the background, the victors’ men-of-war, with their massive volumes and rigging, juxtaposed to the flaming ships of the losers and the billowing smoke, achieve a painterly quality and romantic intensity.

A MEDAL by a French studio, commemorating the Allied victory at Navarino.
On the recto, the helmeted god of war, Ares, in pro- file to the right. The image is framed by a caption in French (‘The Anglo-French-Russian fleet defeats the Turks at Navarino, October 20, 1827’). On the
verso, the crowns of the three Allies are framed by the names of the three admirals in Navarino: the British Edward Codrington (1770-1851), the Dutch admiral of the Russian fleet, Lodewijk van Heiden (1772-1850), and the French Henri De Ri- gny (1782-1835).
