GIVEN THAT MUSKETS, the main type of weapon during the Revolution of 1821, were muz- zle-loaded guns, the fighters, packed the gunpow-
der in the barrel and, in order not to waste it, they placed it in a case made of hard paper, the «bullet cartridge» (< French cartouche).

THE SCHOLAR AND MEMBER OF THE SOCIETY OF FRIENDS, G. Lassanis, was appointed by Dimitrios Ypsilantis as camp mas- ter of Eastern Greece, in recognition of the valuable services he had rendered to his brother, Alexandros.

Lassanis took part in the last battles of the Greeks against the Turks (Livadeia, Thebes, Petra), while after the creation of the independent Greek state, he served, among other things, as Inspector of the Army.
