THE PRE-EMINENT GREEK SCHOLAR
Adamantios Korais (1748-1833) published a number of pamphlets, in which he presented his views on Greek affairs, both before the Revolution (Fraternal Doctrine, 1798; War Song, 1801; Call to Arms, 1800; Memorandum on the Current State of Culture in Greece, 1803; What Greeks Should Do in the Present Circumstances, 1805); and after 1821 (Notes on the Provisional Government of Greece, 1822; On Greek Interests: A Dialogue Between Two Greeks, 1825; A Second Dialogue on Greek Interests, 1827; What Is in Liberated Greece’s Interests to Do in the Present Circumstances, 1830).
This is a bilingual book, published in Zurich in 1823, in Greek with a German translation, of Korais’ foreword to Αριστοτέλους πολιτικών τα σωζόμενα [The extant work of Aristotle’s Politics] (Paris 1821). A foreword by the German transla-
tor, Johan Kaspar von Orelli (February 13, 1823), and a letter by Polychronios Apostolou (Salona, November 23, 1821) to a certain Swiss are also included.
Korais’ Political Advice to the Greeks is a compar- ative discussion of different political systems. This is a part of his so-called Improvised Thoughts, where he presents his views on Greek education and language as an introduction to the volumi- nous collection of ancient texts that he published under the general title Hellenic Library. His fore- words to the ancient writers he edited were col- lected in a separate volume (1833 and 1842).
In his Political Advice, Korais essentially addresses his revolutionary fellow Greeks, underscoring the importance of unity for the Greek nation as a key condition for Europeans to embrace their demand for independence.
