HALL OF THE TROPHIES
Iakovos “Giakoumakis” Tombazis (1782-1829), admiral of the Hydra fleet and commander of the Greek fleet, was one of the first
to suggest the use of fireships in naval warfare during
the War of Independence.
This image by Peter von Hess depicts the naval battle
in the Bay of Eressos,
off Lesvos (May 17, 1821)
– the first naval engagement of the Greek and Ottoman fleets, and one of the greatest Greek successes at sea.
The burning was achieved
by Dimitrios Papanikolis.
Tombazis is shown, standing, on the boat, saluting triumphantly;
in the background,
the Turkish ship is aflame.
