Athanasios Kanakaris (1760-1823), a merchant and dignitary of Patras, and Filiki Etaireia member, at the outbreak
of the Revolution found himself in Constantinople.
As Ottoman authorities wanted him arrested, he fled by boat through the
Russian Embassy, arriving
in Patras in May 1821.
In Peter von Hess’s image,
he is shown waving his
sword, perched on the city walls, along with other revolutionaries. Patras was effectivelly captured without resistance; its fortress, however, remained in Ottoman hands for much longer, until the end of the Revolution.
