Report of the Vice Eparch of Mykonos to the Minister of Internal Affairs, on the topic of the victorious repulsion of the Turkish fleet (Mykonos, 15 October 1822)
Archives of the Greek Regeneration, vol. 13, no 204 [pp. 157-158] Library of the Hellenic Parliament
THE VICTORIOUS for the Greeks naval battle of Mykonos was one of the most decisive battles of the second year of the Greek Revolution. The Ottoman fleet has started in early October its journey for Constantinople, where it would spend the winter. On the way, it anchored at a point off Mykonos, in such a way that on the 11th October a great number of the enemy ships was visible from the island. The inhabitants of Mykonos, perceiving
the danger, with Manto Mavrogenous on the front- line, came down to the harbour in battle position. From the six moored «Algerian brigs» soldiers dis- embarked. There followed clashes, that inflicted big losses upon the attackers. On the contrary, «our brave soldiers of Mykonos, by the power of God and the Holy Mother, did not suffer any casualties, apart from one, who sustained a hand injury [...]». All 76 ships of the enemy fleet left, sailing towards Chios.
