Report of the Governor to the Senate about the maintenance of the Ecclesiastical School of the Zoodochos Pigi Monastery on the island of Poros (Nafplio, 3 February 1830)
Archives of the Greek Regeneration, vol. 21, no. 24 Library of the Hellenic Parliament
IOANNIS KAPODISTRIAS, within the context of his ecclesiastical policy, took care to estab- lish the Ecclesiastical School on Poros, the administra- tion of which was undertaken by Nikolaos Chrysogelos as Secretary of the Ecclesiastics and Public Education. The School was housed in the monastery of Zoodo- chos Pigi and belonged to the schools funded by the government. The pupil population were boarders of 12- 18 years old, while students of older age were admit- ted with a small fee. The School evolved into a centre of ecclesiastical education of the Modern Greek state, since many clergymen graduated from it.
The deeply pious Governor had the vision of found- ing a Higher Theological Academy, along the lines of the corresponding Russian ones, and therefore im- mediately after his election he had asked the schol- ar clergyman and teacher of the Nation, Konstanti- nos Economus of the Economus, to draft a «Plan of Ecclesiastical Academy».
However, the difficult circumstances of the time and the lack of sufficient resources did not allow the im- plementation of the plan.
