306 BEHOLDING LIBERTY!
The Greek Revolution was a historical event with European and international resonance, as it mobilized quite a few
of its foreign supporters. In the big countries with classical cultural tradition (France, Great Britain, Germany, Italy), but also in the European area in general (the Netherlands, Switzerland, Denmark, German-speaking areas), a substantial number of active liberal personalities takes action for the Greek cause.
Either from afar, in their countries,
or in person, coming to Greece,
the Philhellenes help on many levels the Greek Struggle and create the unique phenomenon of Philhellenism.
The philhellenic zeal spread throughout Europe, from the Iberian Peninsula to Russia, but also beyond the Atlantic, especially in the eastern United States of America. It was based on the firm ground of the pre-existing antiquarianism
