348 BEHOLDING LIBERTY!
DECORATIVE PLATES, with black and white, or colour images, were another kind of objet d’art both utilitarian and decorative, where philhel- lenic imagery flourished.
The faience and maiolica manufacturers in Choisy- le-Roi [see cat. nos II.1.24-27] and Montereau [see cat. nos II.2.3-4] produced series of plates with
philhellenic images inspired by scenes from the Greek fighters’ daily life.
Farewell of a Greek Warrior and A Greek Over the Grave of His Friend depict scenes on the sidelines of fighting. In contrast, the image of a Greek Woman in Combat with Pasha and The Ambush convey the pulse and intensity of the fighting. Turks Abducting
