350 BEHOLDING LIBERTY!
II.8.D.11
French factory
Greek troops in ambush, ca. 1825-50
vase of porcelain with gilding and hand-painted representation, height 30 cm Hellenic Parliament Art Collection, inv. n. 956
GREEK TROUPES IN AMBUSH, made after a lithograph by Karl Loeillot, is characteristic of the varied treatment of philhellenic themes in dif- ferent genres.
The same subject is reproduced, slightly differen- tiated, on the vase with a blue background [cat. no
II.8.D.11], the Vieux Paris vase [cat. no II.8.D.12] and a plate from Toulouse with a cobalt-blue monochrome glazing in the image and floral decoration [cat. no II.8.D.14]. Another example of a Vieux Paris vase, Greek Guarding a Passage [cat. no II.8.D.13], is a looser interpretation of the same subject.
