362 BEHOLDING LIBERTY!
In the midst of the Greek Revolution, the illustration of its developments, apart from a purely artistic and aesthetic character, also acquired a utilitarian one, as visual information and propaganda. The most acclaimed works that were created for instance by Eugène Delacroix – The Massacre of Chios (1824) and Greece on the ruins of Missolonghi (1826) – and several more, which were presented
in exhibitions in support of the Greek Struggle, attracted the interest, especially of the philhellenic public.
This, however, did not fade away upon
the completion of the Struggle and its successful outcome; on the contrary,
with the creation of the Modern Greek state, visual rendering of important events and figures of the Greek Revolution multiplied.
