clocks), dozens of important visual works, especially paintings, continued to be produced by first rate artists.
The philhellenic iconography
will last in time, until almost the end of the 19th century, setting up a specific thematic category.
The temporal range, the thematographic variety, the production quantity and
the artistic quality of the philhellenic works delineate philhellenic art as
a unique phenomenon in the history of art, not only of historical but also
of artistic significance.
The philhellenic works monumentalized the Greek Revolution on the visual culture of the 19th century.
At the same time, served as prototypes for the Modern Greek art. Most
of the important Greek artists of
the 19th century produced works of
high symbolism. The inspired by the
Struggle works of Theodoros Vryzakis, Dionysios Tsokos, Nikeforos Lytras, Konstantinos Volanakis, Nikolaos Gyzis, among others, contributed great works to the westernizing neo-Greek art, at the same time also enriching visually the knowledge of the country, during the first periods of the shaping of the national state of Greece. In parallel, popular art added its own «icon»
to the national pantheon, represented by such works as those of the unique Theophilos.
In total, as much the philhellenic art
as the historical painting of the Modern Greek art, succeeded in visualizing monumentally the episodes and protagonists of the Greek Revolution,
in works that even today constitute the «iconostasis» of the Struggle for Independence.
