Portrait of Theodoros Kolokotronis
oil on canvas, 56 × 46 cm
Michael and Demetra Varkarakis Collection
A PORTRAIT of Theodoros Kolokotronis in profile, painted by an unknown artist, probably around the mid-nineteenth century. The military leader of the Struggle is shown in his old age, with a simple fez in place of his iconic helmet. His facial features are similar to those familiar to us from other portraits, paintings and engravings. The sitter’s weathered face and sunken eyes reveal the general as tired yet always energetic and perceptive.

Portrait of Theodoros Kolokotronis
oil on wood, oval 38 x 27 cm (maximum dimensions) The Zaïmis Family Collection
AN OVAL-SHAPED PAINTED PORTRAIT of The- odoros Kolokotronis from a series of four of the same type [cat. no III.1.5].
He is shown wearing a fez, rather than his iconic, British-style helmet, the familiar ornate vest, with lion epaulettes and weap- ons around the waist. This portrait by an anonymous painter was made after the image of Kolokotronis in the series of litho- graphed portraits by Adam Friedel [cf. cat. no. III.8.3].
