Jos Jascher (unidentified artist) Greek warrior standing
oil on porcelain, 35 × 17 cm
signed: Jos Jascher Vienna (bottom right) Michael and Demetra Varkarakis Collection
JOS JASCHER, an otherwise unknown painter, seems to have been active in central Europe, as this work was produced in Vienna, probably in the sec- ond half of the nineteenth century. It depicts a Greek fighter in full combat gear, resting his rifle on the ground, with a sword and pistols in his belt. The uni- form colour of the setting highlights the traditional costume and brings out the white of the fustanella; the sitter gazes boldly towards the viewer.

Paja Jovanović (1859-1957) [attributed] Greek warrior resting, late 19th cent.
oil on canvas, 18 × 19 cm
Michael and Demetra Varkarakis Collection
THE SERBIAN ARTIST PAJA JOVA- NOVIĆ, a prolific painter, specialised in portrai- ture and genre paintings featuring rural Balkan fig- ures. This is a small-scale depiction of a Greek war- rior, fully armed although seated. The artist captures both the sitter and the supplementary elements, as well as the overall setting, with energetic brushwork that nevertheless does not obscure the military at- tire elements.
