148 BEHOLDING LIBERTY!
A few months later (8-9 August), after a heroic battle against the numerically superior enemies, Markos Botsaris is fatally wounded by enemy shot during the Kefalovrysso battle at Karpenissi while fighting against the Pasha Mustafa of Shkodra and a force of at least 10.000 experienced Albanian fighters. The premature death of the Souliot chieftain was a heavy blow to the Greek struggle and caused deep sorrow to the resurrected people of Greece and to Europe.
The vivid figure of M. Botsaris prevails in the center leading his warriors -sword in hand-against the enemy. A beautiful composition, with lots of detail and realistic depiction of movement.
