Personification of the City of Missolonghi
The personification of the city of Missolonghi is mourning on the ruins of the city. In 1826 the Turko-egyptian forces of Ibrahim advance to Missolonghi, where Mahmut Resid Pasha Kiutahi has already besieged the city with 15,000 men, as early as April 1825. The blockade is exhaustive. Hunger and disease decimate the population. Help is delayed. The city of Missolonghi and its inhabitants are going through dramatic moments. Finally, in the night of the 10th to the 11th of April 1826 the heroic Exodus of the of the Missolonghi garrison is decided.
The personification of Missolonghi is seated on a broken doric column, wearing ancient Greek garments and a crown decorated with city walls of the Hellenistic type.
