SOUTH WALL
The Treaty of London
HALL OF THE TROPHIES
The “three protector powers” (England, France, Russia) decide on pacification in the area, proposing to Sultan Mahmud II the granting of autonomy to the Greeks who would pay in return a servitude tax. On July 6, 1827 they sign the Treaty o London which contained a secret supplementary article: in case the Sublime Porte would not accept the terms of the treaty within a month, the agreeing powers would take immediate and proper measures for the enforcement of the truce.
The scene takes place inside a luxurious setting, where the European politicians are discussing on the Greek issue. The upright figure that stands out on the left has been added – it was not included in the original prints of Schwanthaler – and is identified as the British Foreign Minister George Canning, who played a major role in the signing of the treaty.
