Personification of Greece
158 BEHOLDING LIBERTY!
Greece is personified as an archaically dressed woman – figure that is in accordance to the antiquarian spirit of Neoclassicism –holding in her right hand the flags of the three Great Powers, while in the left she raises the symbol of the Christian faith, the cross, in order to place it on the marble stele, where the names of dignified warriors, Greeks and Philhellenes, are inscribed. The symbolic essence of the presentation is yielded here in a concentrated manner: ancient Greek heritage, Christianity, western patrony, along with the self-sacrifice of the Greek heroes, all are enclosed into an allegoric female figure.
