ONE OF THE SERIES OF 12 BRONZE MEDALS featuring elaborate figures and epi- sodes of the Greek War of Independence published by Konrad Lange in 1836. A Bavarian engraver, Lange came to Greece during Otto’s reign, in 1834, and worked at the Athens Mint until 1840.
A symbolic representation of the National Assembly at Epidaurus is shown (verso), with the bipartisan greeting of two Greeks: a fighter with a sword and an older man with a walking stick; the two figures
are joined in embrace by the figure of a priest, centre. The inscription along the perimeter ‘ΚΑΙ ΕΣΕΣΘΕ ΜΟΙ ΕΙΣ ΛΑΟΝ ΚΑΙ ΕΣΟΜΑΙ ΥΜΙΝ ΕΙΣ ΘΕΟΝ’ (and I will be their God, and they shall be my people) comes from Jeremiah (31:33); the date and place of the National Assembly (Epidaurus, January 1, 1822) is shown underneath the figures.
On the recto, the portrait of the soldier, diplomat and politician Alexandros Mavrokordatos (1791- 1865), in a beautifully executed profile.
