Duel between a Greek and Turk
table clock of multi-coloured porcelain with gold ornamentation, 58 × 34 × 17 cm Michael and Demetra Varkarakis Collection
Hydra Sailor resting on an anchor [cat. no II.8.D.16] echoes the lithograph by Louis Dupré in Voyage à Athènes et à Constantinople (Paris 1825).
Greek Defeating a Turk [cat. no II.8.D.17] is a variation of a lithograph by Karl Loeillot which shows a Greek capturing the enemy flag.
Duel Between a Greek and a Turk [cat. no II.8.D.18] is
essentially a variation on the theme of Giaour and Hassan [cat. no II.8.D.2-5]. The colourful porcelain imbues it with a painterly quality.
The figure of a Souliote [cat. no II.8.D.19] is an origi- nal design perfectly adapted to this fine example of a table clock, made in 1831 by a renowned manu- facturer.
