PHILIP JAMES GREEN served as the Brit- ish consul for the Peloponnese, based in Patras; he therefore had a first-hand experience of the events of the Greek Revolution. His correspondence is an important source of information for the years 1821- 26; it is supplemented by documents in English translation in the appendix.
For instance, it contains, in English translation, the proclamation of the Greek revolutionaries, on March 26, 1821, to the consuls of the Christian powers in Patras, whom they urge to support their just demand in the face of ever-increasing Ottoman oppression. The proclamation is signed by Germanos of Old Pa- tras and Andreas Zaimis, among others.
This is the second edition of Green’s work; the first had come out a year earlier, by W. Wilson.
