Korakistika (wordplay language) or correction of the Romaic language
s.l. 1813
Library of the Hellenic Parliament
THIS THREE-ACT comical work alludes through its title to the «korakistika/gibberish» of chil- dren’s lingo, making an ingenious pun with the sur- name of Adamantios Korais, whose positions on the language issue are parodied.
The writer, Iakovakis Rizos Neroulos (1778-1849) came from the Phanariot circle of Katartzis’ descen- dants, whose linguistic preferences he indirectly supports. Apart from Korakistika/Gibberich, he has written in Vienna the theatrical plays Aspasia (1813) and Polyxeni (1814). Famous also is his work Cours
de Littérature Grecque Moderne (Geneva 1827), which is the first work on the history of Neo-Hellenic literature.
Apart from his activity as writer, Rizos Neroulos got involved in public affairs undertaking high political and administrative offices as much in the Danubian Principalities as in the independent Greek state, while he contributed to the founding of the Univer- sity of Athens, the Archaeological Society and the Φιλεκπαιδευτική Society (Society for the Promotion of Education and Learning).
THE ARCHIMANDRITE NEOFYTOS DOUKAS (1760-1845), an Epirot member of the Society of Friends, scholar and teacher, from 1803 and for twelve years was the parish priest of the Greek community in Vienna, where he lived, taught and wrote. The fruit of that period is also Pedago- gy, an alphabet book for learning how to read. It is a type of teaching textbook particularly popular in the context of the Neo-Hellenic Enlightenment, as from early on, books under the title Pedagogy were written specifically for teaching either at school or at home. They reflect the interest of the scholars of the time in the methodology, content and objectives of the educational process as an avenue for con- quering individual and collective happiness.
