Grigorios Paliouritis
Epitome of the History of Greece, vol. II Venice: By Nikolaos Glykys of Ioannina, 1807 Library of the Hellenic Parliament
PRIEST-MONK AND SCHOLAR from Ioannina, Grigorios Paliouritis (1778-1816) got his appellative from the Monastery of Paliouris in Epi- rus, where he received his elementary education by a monk. Among other things, from 1805 on- wards he was a teacher of the Greek community in Livorno of Italy.
The two-volume work Επιτομή της Ιστορίας της Ελλάδος/Epitome of the History of Greece, which the writer dedicates to the Greek brotherhood of Livorno, was printed in Venice in the printing
house of the Glykides family from Ioannina. On page ιθ ́(19) of volume A, the author refers to the reasons that led him to write this treatise: «... in our teaching Schools ... totally neglected and almost ostracized are the lectures on History». It is therefore a teaching textbook, that aimed at developing a historic consciousness in the young people, in order to revive the «spring flowers» of wisdom, valour and virtue of Greece, which a wind «hot indeed [...] from the most arid deserts» had burned.
